Viet Nam
1967-1968

Since childhood, Robert Anton had been "doodling" -- which included his experimentation with
charcoal as a means of creating his sketches. It was, therefore, an activity he kept doing
in his spare-time(?) after being sent to Viet Nam. However, it so happened that his
sketches were seen by a "Colonel" who then made Robert an offer he simply
couldn't refuse, to wit:Extend your tour of duty for a year and I will send
you to my headquarters in Saigon where you can do your sketching
full-time. As a result, Robert Anton spent that next year taking
photographs from a combat helicopter -- which he then
converted into photo-realistic combat art, in the form
of charcoal sketches, which then were displayed
on the walls of various high-ranking officers.
However, this points to a problem that
touches many young artists without
either the way or means to retain
control of their own creative
output -- the net result of
which is that their work
often disappears --
never to be seen
again by the
creator of
the art

The JPEG images, shown above, are the only surviving record of (young) Anton's emerging talent
and these are, themselves, from a veteran's personal website ----- (no longer in existence).
The reason this factor is being presented here is that -- over the course of nearly
four decades -- it is estimated that more than 98% of Anton's original art
was either stolen or ended up in the possession of others without
any compensation being offered in exchange. As a result,
the present effort of trying to bring Anton's work to
the world stage as a historical perspective
is now limited to what can be offered
courtesy of the camera lens.
However, what we have
is now yours to
enjoy.

That which you are about to see is the product of AHLEC's "GIMP" project
which involves a "total artistic novice" using a computer to create
The Robert W. Anton Gallery
(from scratch)
In this presentation "total novice" refers to a student who was (in the beginning)
so "artistically challenged" that he didn't know the difference between
a "pixel" and a "dot" ----- and had NO graphics training.
In addition -- the creation of this new Gallery
was done on a ZERO dollar budget
using only GIMP* software
on a PC with Win XP
plus a Canon
scanner

available to everyone -- without charge -- at www.gimp.org
and here is your

Please note this is just Phase 1 of the
