On The Meaning of Time

On the "Meaning of time". . . . .

The "time" has come (we said before) to speak of many things;

So, let us speak of TIME, itself, to see just what IT means.

It would appear, TIME has evolved as a "game" with complex rules;

But, as it's played in Modern Times, this "game" seems meant for fools.

While watching Nature's cycles (often feeling awe or dread),

Man learned that "day" was TIME for work; and, "night" was TIME for bed.

As TIME went on, these cycles were divided into parts;

And, so it was that "telling TIME" became one of the "arts".

To aid Man in his hurry ---- and, then, to "time" his wait,

Our species, next, invented "clocks" (so Man would not be late ???)

Man's children, then, were taught to think: TIME's something "saved" or "spent";

[ Though, TIME is NOT an "object" ---- (nor, is it an "event") ]

Mankind, it seems, went off the track when it started to contend:

TIME is that which fits between a "beginning" and an "end".

Compounding that disaster, Man created the contention,

That TIME is "real" [ which means (in space) there IS a fourth dimension ???? ].

( To be precise ) TIME is a "word" (a symbolistic "tool"),

By means of which Man can "describe" a fundamental rule.

Within the scope of Nature's plan is a Universal Law,

ALL things involve a "process-ing"; or, they don't exist at all.

And, to the door called "pro-cess-ING", duration seems the key;

For, no word exists in Nature's Book defined as "instantly".

Now -- should there be no "We" or You" ( a thought some find unpleasant );

There, also, would no longer be: "duration" -- past, or present.

Duration, then, is just a "word" -- (a "lens" for mental "seeing" ) --

That tends to show, compared to man, the length of other "be-ings".

The "essence" of duration is -- ( when couched within these rhymes ) --

Comparative relationships, expressed in terms of "TIMES".

But -- this "essence of duration" is fairly hard to see,

As it describes "relationships" in terms that CANNOT be.

There is NO "nanosecond" -- or single part thereof --

Where one can say, exactly: "THAT's when I fell in love !"

And, as NO "things" in Nature are separate from the rest,

Just what does one begin with, to initiate TIMES' "test" ?

In pro-cess-ING there is NO "start" -- nor, can there be an "ending";

For "that which IS" will always cause a past and future blending.

(SO) -- as "observation" sets apart "reality" from "dreaming",

To whom -- or what (except for Man) -- do TIMES have any meaning ??

Please now "observe" the world-at-large -- then, tell us (IF you can) - -

IF you're still sure that TIME is "real" ----- when was it "YOU" began ???

Hi there ! ---- Hope you had some "fun" with this little "rhyme on time".

IF you want to have some more "FUN" -- ask your friends how "old" THEY are???
(now that YOU know the "secret" of time???)

One other "fun-type" NOTE -- relative to this rhyme -- is that A-David wrote it in 1979
as part of a world-wide celebration of Albert Einstein's birth.
(even though the rhyme was never published)
