On the "Environmental Crisis"
In traveling through Man's "world of words" (with all its "ins and outs"),
We're quite amazed how many claim they "know" what "life's" about.
From the soap-box on the corner to the Scholar's "hallowed hall",
Each "self-appointed" mentor says that what he says is "LAW".
"The world is coming to an end, in another 'umpteen' years",
screams the one up on his soap-box as he plays upon our fears.
"The world is coming to an end", sobs the expert on his dais,
as he scribbles out the formulae that substantiate his bias.
"The world is coming to an end", ecologists all say,
"if Man does not reverse himself and end his wasteful way".
"There is no need to worry", contend religiously inclined,
"for you can live FOREVER if you cast 'sin' from your mind".
"There is no need to worry",
cry the hawkers on the street,
"just live-it-up from day-to-day; make merry; drink; and, eat".
"There is no need to worry",
shouts the candidate with money,
"elect me NOW, and soon you'll see a land of milk and honey".
What TO believe ? Just what IS "Truth" ?
What can sate this mental yearning ?
(For us) an Answer seems to be: There is no end to learning !
To us, each day is beautiful, with its sunlight and its rains;
For it gives us yet another chance to exercise our brains.
We appreciate the background ----- the "stage" that Nature built -----
And we "dig" it when an "actor" plays his part up to the hilt.
But, among the things we do believe, as we watch the play unfold,
Most "actors" merely quote a script ----- and do just as they're told.
From childhood on, we all are schooled in what is "right" and "wrong";
And, if we don't obey the "rules" ----- well, we simply don't belong.
But -- in dealing with Man's "world of words" -- it has come to our attention,
What others say is seldom "fact" ----- so we, at least, still question !!
