This rhyme is based on a folk-tale of a
poor traveler who came across an old
"beggar woman" who, then, asked him for a little food, as she was starving.
The traveler -- having only one small loaf of bread for
himself -- nevertheless gave it to the old woman.
And -- in return for
this kindness -- the "beggar woman" (really a "good spirit" in disguise)
gave the traveler a little coin pouch which, at the time, appeared empty.
Later that day, the traveler came to an Inn. Because he was hungry, he asked the
innkeeper for a crust of bread, saying he was sorry -- but he had no money -----
just an empty coin pouch, which he then took out to show the innkeeper.
However, when he opened the coin pouch -- Lo and Behold -- inside was a
little gold coin,
more than enough for both a satisfying meal and a comfortable night's
lodging.
The next morning, the traveler once
again opened the little coin pouch and -- to his amazement
-- it
contained another little gold coin. And -- for the rest of his life --
each time he "gave" his
gold coin away ----- it was "magically" replaced with another of equal
value.
